Our daily life is based on environmental systems; the air we breathe, the food we eat or the materials we use. Knowledge about the state and trend of environmental systems is thus crucial for our livelihood. Environmental monitoring exactly provides this fundamental data and information. The goal of this module is to introduce you to the key concepts, elements and methodological approaches of environmental monitoring that enable you to formulate an environmental monitoring system and perform selected GIS-related monitoring tasks. The module will take you to many real world examples from a wide range of environmental monitoring applications.

Dr. Lukas Mathys
Lukas Mathys is experienced in the integrated management of natural resources and holds a MSc in Biology as well as a PhD in Life Sciences. With his methodological background ranging from remote sensing, GIS, and statistics to predictive modelling he often bridges science and ICT. He has been involved in the design and implementation of several environmental monitoring systems from local to international scales.
We would like to inform you that this is an exclusively english language module, hence any kind of communication with the module instructor should be in English. A discussion forum is maintained in Blackboard in order to support efficient module instruction. You are requested to submit all your questions related to this module to this forum only. The instructor will check all incoming comments on a regular basis. She will answer your questions or provide you with pointers for solving your problems. The module is delivered in form of an instructed self-study that is based on explorative learning process and process. Theoretical concepts are complemented with practice oriented examples demonstrated with help of multimedia elements. Upon completion of the module students are requested to evaluate the module, which is a part of our quality assurance policy and practice.
The module is generally organized along the process of designing and implementing an environmental monitoring system. Each critical stage is illustrated with existing examples and best practices. You are introduced to the relevant concepts, tools and methods, which you are then applying in exercises. Module language is English.
Software and Literature
Environmental monitoring is an interdisciplinary field. Hence, different sources of literature are provided.
All exercises are either based on R (www.r-project.org) or QGIS (www.qgis.org), both open source softwares.
Assessment and Grading
The assessment is based on your completed assignments. They must be submitted in written format (.PDF/.DOC) to the Dropbox within the required time period. If assignments are submitted late, the instructor is not obligated to grade them. It will be listed as such on your transcript.
